Cancelled Insomniac Spider-Man Game Trailer Leaks Online

Earlier today, a trailer for an unannounced—and reportedly canceled—online Spider-Man spin-off game from Insomniac leaked onto Reddit and social media. The trailer showcases multiple players taking on the roles of various famous Spider-heroes while exploring New York City and other universes.

In the leaked trailer for Spider-Man: The Great Web, we hear Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker introducing the concept of the game, explaining that “Sometimes you can swing it as a lone wolf, but you’re way better off with some friends.” He also worries that the evil Sinister Six—a group of famous Spidey villains including Doc Ock—are ramping up their activities and becoming more dangerous and “savage.” “I don’t think I’m going to be enough this time, guys. But together, we just might be,” says Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. So that’s where other players would come in and help work together to take on criminals across New York City.

The trailer shows what appears to be the ability for folks to play as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, and even Venom. It also hints at other universes connected to the game’s main setting, using portals that look a lot like they came out of the animated Spiderverse films. Combat and exploration look to be ripped right out of Spider-Man 2 on PS5.

Don’t get too excited about The Great Web, though, as the game was reportedly canceled “long ago” according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier in 2023. We’ve seen other live-service Sony games get the axe over the last year, including The Last of Us’s multiplayer game.

This recently leaked trailer is part o the massive data breach that hit Insomniac last year, leaking 1.7 terabytes of data and over 1 million files onto the internet. The data breach—which followed a December 2023 ransomware attack against the Ratchet and Clank studio—provided insight into the inner workings of one of Sony’s most successful studios, revealing the cost of AAA game development and just how busy the studio is these days. It sadly also revealed loads of personal employee information causing a lot of headaches and frustration for Insomniac staff right before the holidays.

While The Great Web might not be happening, Insomniac still has plenty of other Marvel-themed games in the works, including an already-announced Wolverine game and an X-Men game that is reportedly exclusive to PS5 and PC. There are also plans to make more Spider-Man games and possible spin-offs, too.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
