New Fallout Xbox Controller Is Cool, But Pricey

Next month, the live-action Fallout TV show premieres and, seemingly in preparation for that, Xbox and Bethesda have released a new, customizable controller design that looks pretty dang swanky. However, it’s going to cost you some extra caps compared to a standard custom Xbox controller.

For those unaware, Xbox has run a controller “Design Lab” for a few years now, allowing users to create their very own gamepad designs and pay a bit extra to have them made and shipped to them. You can change things like the color of the controller, what the buttons look like, and what kind of material the triggers are made out of, and add extras like rubber grips. As someone who loves a weird-looking but good controller, I’ve used the Design Lab a few times and been happy with each odd, neon-colored creation I’ve ordered. And now, folks can make a Fallout-themed controller.

Xbox / Bethesda

On March 5, Xbox announced on its official news blog that a new controller design option was now live on its custom Xbox gamepad store. The design is inspired by Fallout, Bethesda’s popular post-apocalyptic RPG franchise. More specifically, the new artwork you can get on a controller features various cartoon drawings of Vault Boy—a character who has become the franchise’s mascot. It’s a nice, not too boring but not too gaudy design that would fit well alongside the fantastic Starfield controller from last year.

Even better, you can customize this Fallout design. You can alter the color of the triggers, D-pad, thumbsticks, back plate, bumpers, and all the face buttons. You can also add a short engraved message. (No, “War Never Changes” doesn’t fit.) However, be prepared to pay more if you start adding too much.

Just adding the Fallout design bumps the total price of the controller to $85. For comparison, a custom Design Lab Xbox controller with standard colors and features costs $70. If you decide to add even more to the Fallout-themed pad, you’ll be looking at over $100. That’s a lotta caps!

If you are willing to fork over the dough, the Xbox Fallout controller design is now available via the Design Lab website. Xbox doesn’t say how long this will stick around, so if you want it, you’d better act sooner than later.
